I Went Viral... Well Sort of

So no, I didn't go viral in the sense that we normally think of, more on that below.

Oh and if you just want book reviews: go here!

About that Viral Thing

Ok so back to the viral... I didn't go viral so much as I GOT viral. While everyone is watching the COVID virus, my body chose to succumb to shingles. You know that commercial where they say "Shingles doesn't care" they should say "Shingles doesn't give a $%*#". It's no joke.

Here's the back story:

On Thursday and Friday last week, I was having tremendous hip and knee pain in my right knee. Not unusual for me to have hip pain from time to time, and even though this was much more significant, I just chalked it up to a bad couple of days.

Once the rash developed, it still took me a couple days to realize I needed medical attention. When I did, it was 10 PM on Monday night. Thankfully my insurance includes free 24-hour telemedicine. Without going into too much detail shingles are distinctive and a quick photo and the diagnosis was confirmed. Since I was late to the game the Rx was going to be less effective, but he called one in nonetheless.

I immediately started my homeopathic research!

Vitamins

We know it is the building block for nearly all immune boosting efforts. WebMD says "Vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. The tolerable upper intake level (or the maximum amount you can take in a day that likely won’t cause harm) is 2000 mg a day for adults."

I also am taking a product call Viracid that contains the zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A, L-lysine and pantothenic acid, which each play a major role in maintaining a healthy, functioning immune system.

Then Geranium!

Geranium essential oil can reduce the nerve pain associated with shingles. Typically, 2–3 drops of essential oil are added to several tablespoons of carrier oil. Apply the mixture directly to affected areas of skin. Geranium oil in a concentration of 100% appears to be about twice as effective as a 50% concentration.

And Tea Tree!

Melaleuca or Tea tree oil may provide anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and can promote wound healing. It is also a great add to shampoo as it improves blood circulation and removes toxins from the scalp, paving way for healthy hair growth. I have a tea tree roller ball like this one!

Next Melissa!

Studies have demonstrated that Melissa (aka Lemon Balm) oil may have excellent antiviral properties and it is a popular and very effective natural remedy for viruses. You can try application directly (with a carrier oil). I couldn't stand to touch them not only were they sore but they were gross, so I made a spray of all three and kept it in the fridge. So cooling and refreshing. In fact, hold on, BRB...

So, what started all this? Turns out dental work can trigger shingles. Having had a crown put on a tooth 2 weeks ago this seems like a logical connection. Other things like an accident, physical/emotional stress, exposure to other diseases or virus can all cause a shingles outbreak.

Thanks for reading, I do hope some of this is helpful, it's not as fun and light hearted as some of my blogs, but seriously, if you carry the chickenpox virus BE CAREFUL and BE MINDFUL. I don't think enough people talk about shingles other than we all know they are painful. My advice is to take early symptoms way more seriously that I did.

Last month I did a bunch of book reviews from my Spring Break and never sent out an email. I'm forgetful so make sure you subscribe! Here's the link to that blog. Hope you all are healthy and well!

Take Good Care!
